Interview Techniques

What makes a good interview? Well, reasonable interviews don’t happen by accident. There are many things that a good interviewer has to accomplish to develop a well-detailed interview. A reasonable interview comprises of the interviewer capturing promising behavior and the personality of the individual. As well, the interviewer records everything they see, does not formulate assumptions, fact checks their data, has adequate researching abilities, forms trust with the interviewee and does not fabricate any data.

Favorable interviews capture the good behavior of an individual. Capturing the behavior of the individual is significant because it demonstrates how the individual lives their everyday life, which can ultimately give the interviewer crucial information about the individual.

Reasonable interviews should also capture the personality of the individual. This is because when people read the interview they can visualize the type of individual the interviewee is and can occasionally pertain to them, which can generate them more intrigued into the interview.

The littlest details can give you many details about the individual you are interviewing. Recording everything you see such as the slightest details can bring you more information about the interviewee. Such as quotes they stated, their manner when they talk to you, eye contact is made or any music playing in the environment. All these factors can show the patterns people have in they’re a lifestyle.

What you see might not be the truth, be careful of the assumptions you make with the evidence. Just because you may think that something is going to happen, people can do the opposite and surprise you. This mistake in an interview can make your whole interview become void.

Fact-checking is such an important step after an interview. You should make sure the interviewee is not lying to you, and check everything in detail to avoid any mistakes. These mistakes can result in serious consequences that can take a toll on your life if it is not authentic.

Good interview skills do not relate to good research skills. But good research skills can be very good for one’s interview. This helps the interviewer know the background of the interviewee more.

In order to get the true information you want, you need to build trust from your interviewee. Paying attention to what they say, can be impactful for trust-building. This is because when a person is felt like they are being listened to, they start to have a trust bond that grows between them.

As a reporter, you should never lie to your audience. Do not fake any information that was mentioned in the interview. If one fakes any information and can’t back up the story with authentic notes, then the interview is pretty much a fictional story to people that read it.

Good interviews are very few. But when done properly are very good to read/listen to. They consist of good researching skills, captures the character and behavior of the individual, fact-checking, recording every detail, and no assumptions. This is what makes a good interview and it’s a lot of things to try and do for every interview. That’s why good interviews don’t happen by accident. Good interviews take time to prepare and a good interviewer with great interview techniques.
